This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the art textiles process I developed while at architecture school in the early 1990s. From gathering inspiration by sketching outdoors, through to the creation of stitched artworks, with all the stages between (details below).

This was my second venture into teaching online. I released it when the pandemic was in full swing, so an enormous number of people enjoyed its lessons as the world took to the internet for solace and stimulation. It hasn't been available to new students for a number of years now, as I disliked my unpolished filming, unamused voice and occasional backing music. I recently had cause to revisit it, however, and decided that what I thought cringey actually has a nostalgic low-tech charm. The main thing is that it's crammed with good stuff, from simple en plein air sketching, to deconstructing garments and transforming fabric via paint, collage and stitch.

WHAT YOU GET
• Downloadable course document (PDF)
• Ten video lessons (varying from 20 to 50 minutes long) with supporting material, such as lesson summaries, glossary, reference list, quotes, anecdotes, and static illustrations
• Two weekend briefs, designed to help you springboard an independent piece at the end of each week based on what you have learned from the preceding five lessons

FURTHER DETAILS ON CONTENT
We will start by making observational drawings with textiles in mind. I’ll show you where and how to find and record textures, forms, colour palettes, and interacting hard and soft elements that will provide a rich visual resource for art textiles. Even if you think you can’t draw, I will show you how depict and analyse what inspires you, as a grid of annotated thumbnails in a sketchbook. We will then move on to the extraction of lines and blocks for developing several abstracted compositions in layers; still working on paper, but with painted and stitched textiles in mind. Next, working with unwanted garments, I will introduce the contemplative and soothing process of deconstructing seams and hems, pockets, cuffs, and collars. This is partly as a way of generating fabric from a sustainable source, but also as a conceptual act, perhaps inspiring consideration of materiality to be built on as you develop ideas for artwork. I will show you how the resultant fabric sections can be altered using a wide range of media and methods, to create a textile palette. We will then explore how pieces can be cut and ripped, joined and layered in a final piece. I will show you how to add texture and detail by layering scraps of gossamer fabrics, strands of gauzy fleece, and thread ends, adding a final layer of marks by painting and hand stitching.
