In this foundational course, the complexities of colour are deconstructed into manageable building blocks to help you achieve fluency in the magical but elusive language of colour.
Designed as a prequel to my “Finding Your Colour Voice” course, this is the essential tool for anyone wishing to refresh or improve their understanding and use of colour.
Ten easy-to-follow lessons are packed with practical and fun exercises to reframe the technicalities of colour in a new and accessible way.

• What is colour anyway?
• Observing colour in art and nature
• Understanding the attributes of colour: hue, value and intensity
• The importance of context (perception and colour interaction)
• Understanding the colour wheel of primary, secondary and tertiary colours
• Basic rules of colour mixing (how to make the colours you want)
• Making chromatic greys and other neutrals
• How to choose colours and assemble limited palettes
• Manipulating hue, value and intensity (aka chroma or saturation)
• How to use colour to bring harmony, unity and contrast to a composition
WHAT YOU GET
• Downloadable quick-start guide to colour terminology
• Ten 30-40 minute video lessons, each with supporting web page featuring: summary of exercise(s), plus additional content such as quotes, anecdotes, and static illustrations
• Two weekend briefs, designed to help you springboard an independent piece at the end of each week based on what you have learned from the preceding five lessons
• Two bonus FAQ videos in which I respond to questions posed prior to and during the initial run of the course.
YOU WILL NEED
• Artist quality watercolour paint (pans or tubes) in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, white and black (*scroll down for further info), plus any other colours you have or would like to use with improved understanding
• Round watercolour brush (size 6, 7 or 8)
• Cold pressed (NOT) watercolour paper, at least 300gsm (140lb). Suitable sizes: 36x26cm (14x10in), 41x31cm (16 x12in), A3 or Legal
• General stationery supplies (pen, pencil, eraser, sharpener, craft knife, steel ruler, cutting mat, scissors, compass, scrap paper etc)
• Large white mixing palette or several small plates
• Clear glass jars
HOW TO ACCESS THE COURSE

* Any basic set will give you a good starting point. As the course progresses, I will discuss a variety of pigments. This will help you analyse and understand the colours you have, and know how to grow your set. I will be using watercolours from my own range. My core set will be Quinacridone Red, Pyrrole Red, Pyrrole Orange, Pyramid Yellow, Bismuth Vanadate Lemon Yellow, Permanent Green, Phthalo Blue (Green Shade), French Ultramarine, Dioxazine Violet. Spindrift and Peppercorn. These will be added to with blends and other single pigments.
