Colour Palettes at the Ashmolean - OXFORD - 8 and 9 Feb 2025

£200.00

DATE: Sat 8th and Sun 9th February 2025.
TIME: 10am - 4pm each day.
VENUE: The Community Works, 21 Park End St, Oxford OX1 1HH, UK.

INSPIRATIONAL VISIT: Ashmolean Museum, Beaumont Street, Oxford, OX1 2PH, UK. We will visit the museum during day 1 of the workshop (no entry fee, but a £5 donation is included in the workshop fee).

On Day 1 we will start at The Community Works then transfer to the museum (10 minute walk) after a short introductory session. On Day 2, we will remain at The Community Works all day, immersing ourselves in slow painting as we respond to notes and sketches made on Day 1.

The aim of this two-day workshop is to explore personal responses to different colour palettes. Artefacts and collections within the Ashmolean will provide inspiration. During day 1, you will explore galleries (freely or with suggestions from Tansy) hunting for and recording combinations of colour that evoke a response in you. Your interest may lie purely in colour, or you may find that cultural, historic and material differences in exhibits are impossible to detach from their colour. During the Ashmolean visit you will observe, analyse and make notes (visual and written) on a variety of colour palettes and other usages of colour. These will be used as starting points for mindful watercolour painting during Day 2.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Mixed media sketching and annotation (dry materials only on Day 1 in galleries) and watercolour (in the studio on Day 2).

Art supplies and light refreshments will be provided. Please bring your own lunch (a café or supermarket is walking distance from all venues).

Supper at a restaurant in central Oxford on the Saturday evening will be an optional extra (not included in the workshop price). Tansy will communicate with you via email about this sociable extra nearer the time.

Any questions? Please email [email protected].

This weekend workshop is one of a series taking place at venues around the UK. All events have the same aim: to explore and strengthen personal experience of colour, both as an art medium and as a way of living in the moment.

Structured using the same principles, methods and mindsets, each date and location will offer something different to participants. Tangible and transient sources of inspiration will vary as the workshop moves from place to place. Local stories, artefacts, and vernacular environments will change, as will class dynamics, seasonal light and weather, stimulating unique responses to Tansy’s input, which will be tailored to each venue. Suitable for all levels of experience and ability.
