Viewfinder Clipboard
After years of juggling with sketching materials while standing on rocks in streams and on blustery moorland tussocks, I created the viewfinder clipboard*.
No longer did I have to work with a cardboard window taped to my sketchbook, art materials shoved unseen in pockets, and the feeling that I never had enough hands.
This three-in-one viewfinder tool is made in the UK from 3mm waxed birch wood in small batches. Six laser cut apertures provide a range of different viewpoints for selecting and cropping scenes and details to sketch or simply consider. Cord straps are attached to hold a small sketchbook or loose-leaf paper thus providing a firm drawing surface. Alternatively, a larger sketchbook can be clipped in place. An expandable triple metal pen holder allows you to keep a limited palette of drawing media within reach and in sight of your sketchbook.
The viewfinder comes with an instructional booklet: “Finding Views: A Tiny Guide to Thumbnail Sketching". Seven little pages and a fold-out spread, containing step-by-step instructions on using the kit. The booklet also shares tips on assembling a mixed media palette, inspiration on where, when, and what to sketch, and how to annotate and develop your sketches after a sketching session.
Left handed? If you’d like a viewfinder assembled as a mirror image of the one pictured just add a note at checkout. Many left handers happily use the viewfinder board with their right hand holding the board between the sketchbook space and the apertures, but if you want a custom assembly that is perfectly fine too.
