Conté à Paris' founder Nicolas Jacques Conté developed modern pencil graphite in 1794 by combining clay and graphite, making it possible to manufacture different hardness grades consistently. Since then the name 'Conté à Paris' has become synonymous with exceptional quality in pencils and pastels.
